About

Hello, my name is Katherine.

In December 2009, I was diagnosed with stomach cancer.  On January 8, 2010, I had a total gastrectomy (removal of entire stomach).  I was fortunate that the cancer was caught so early because it meant I did not need chemotherapy or radiation.

This is the story of my journey from the accidental discovery of the cancer cells, surgery, post-surgical complications to my current struggle to find a new normal.

I have discovered that there aren’t many resources available for individuals post-gastrectomy and they are especially limited when there are complications.  Most support groups are geared for individuals who are new to the diagnosis or those who are going thru treatment (chemotherapy and radiation).

I have also discovered that there is a huge gap in the knowledge of the medical field when it comes to diagnosing when there are complications.  I truly understand why it is referred to as the “practice” of medicine.

I hope my journey will be of some value to others – be it encouragement, humor, finding resources, becoming your own medical advocate, supporting each other, discussions of similar complications, or simply spending time with someone who shares a similar experience – total gastrectomy for stomach cancer.
